i wrote you a poem two years ago
an album the year after that
and eight years before
i was learning the chore
to walk with chest out and feet flat
i wrote i regretted my shoe choice
that snow that fell white had turned brown
of all of the ways to turn down a street
how few there were to turn the street down
now we’re falling in idlewild grasses
two poets in didion glasses
how stupid of me at tall 23
to ever hold on to your sleeve
and i’ll stop shaving my legs
for two weeks at max so rebecca can wax them
surface cells thrown to the sea
and i’ll start shaving my head
and plot a design of
the joyful demise of
a chrysalis shirked off of me
now we're falling in idlewild grasses
two poets in didion glasses
how stupid of me at tall 23
to ever hold on to your sleeve
